European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
