Historical Context
Forest vs Malmö and past encounters. The two clubs have a historical link, also competing in Forest's last European campaign in the UEFA Cup of 1995-96, but it is the continental championship decades past that connects these teams, with Britain's first £1m player the English forward netting the decisive goal of a largely forgettable match to secure historic victory for the red half of Nottingham.
"The legendary management duo, grey-sweatered and anonymous amid all the colour and celebration, stood for a moment on a bench serenely viewing the mafficking," wrote the match reporter. Their achievement was an outstanding achievement that it is difficult to imagine happening again – from the lower league to continental competition in just three years."
One should note to pause a little on Malmö, who became the initial and final Nordic team to make the championship match under manager Houghton.
This match is a far cry from that summit, closer perhaps to the earlier European encounter between Forest and Malmö in 1995-96. Forest are full of confidence after thrashing Liverpool at the famous ground on Saturday, while Malmö haven't played officially since 9 November following the end of the Swedish league season. The general expectation is on the Forest tonight.
Additional games on offer in this live coverage. Rangers have already been lost to a Portuguese opponent this season. Rangers are rock bottom of the 36-team Europa League standings at the half-way stage of the group stage with exactly zero. They urgently require a victory if they are to have any opportunity for a late surge for a playoff spot.
Updates will continue with all nine of the 8pm kick-offs and provide the current standings from the previous games, including Aston Villa v Young Boys and Rotterdam vs Glasgow.
