Roughly 50 cars have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.
Police report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then found multiple other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement state early analysis show the substance was probably human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; authorities are currently not informed of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for details.
A senior representative said the incident left him speechless and needed to be solved quickly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing attack five years ago," he stated on social media, recalling the murder of nine people by a shooter aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
